Boca Grande

Boca Grande Pass is a wonderful pass just 15 miles West of North Port. This is the site where the tarpon come for a great fishing run in mid May. Tarpon weigh about 100 pounds and swim through the pass, surfacing many times as they swim through. Behind them are the sharks looking for a meal! I go there often, but usually do not take my camera as salt air is tough on electronics. The beach pictures are of Coasta Maya, a island state park (on the South side of Boca Grande Pass) that is usually void of people with miles and miles of beautiful sand beaches. Coasta Maya is accessible only by boat. My first Florida boat had the misfortune of sinking in this pass; my fishing buddy and I were very aware of getting to shore as quickly as possible as this is prime shark area; a 1300 'pounder' was landed here two years ago! The pass becomes very tumultuous when the tide comes in and many a boater has died trying to navigate this choppy water.
